Brief description: Azerbaijan National Committee of ICOM has affiliated to the Organisation at the Paris ICOM Session in 1993.
The aim of creation of the National Committee was to establish scientific and creative relations with museum community of the world, popularize experience of foreign museums in Azerbaijan, and make Azerbaijan museums better known abroad.
From the first days of its work, the National Committee was an active part of ICOM. The Committee issues the ICOM Azerbaijan Newsletter in three languages where it informs national museums about achievements in museum work of the world. The newsletter is distributing not only in the country, but also abroad.
The National Committee and Azerbaijan museums carry out a great work to protect 22 museums and 4 art galleries, with over 100,000 objects, abandoned in the occupied territory of Azerbaijan. The ICOM-Azerbaijan has collected information about the cultural objects and, with assistance of UNESCO, issued the leaflet about these objects to protect them. The ICOM-Azerbaijan also made an appeal to UNESCO and ICOM for preventing the cultural objects from looting.
Moreover, the National Committee has published a collection of national and foreign laws on protecting cultural heritage.
For protection of the cultural heritage, the ICOM Azerbaijan has also organized two international events, round table and conference, concerning adhering Azerbaijan to international conventions.
